What is AP Physics?

AP Physics is a set of rigorous, college-level courses designed by the College Board to provide high school students with a deep understanding of fundamental physics principles. These courses challenge students to develop problem-solving skills, apply mathematical reasoning, and think critically about the physical world. There are four AP Physics courses, each with a unique focus:

  • AP Physics 1: Covers Newtonian mechanics, work, energy, power, mechanical waves, and simple circuits. It requires algebra-based mathematical skills.
  • AP Physics 2: Continues from AP Physics 1, exploring topics like fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics, and modern physics.
  • AP Physics C: Mechanics: A calculus-based course focusing on advanced Newtonian mechanics concepts, including rotational motion and gravitation.
  • AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism: Another calculus-based course that delves into electrostatics, circuits, magnetism, and electromagnetic induction.

Each AP Physics course demands a strong conceptual understanding and the ability to apply physics principles to solve complex problems. These courses are equivalent to introductory college physics classes and are designed to prepare students for STEM-related college majors and careers.


The Challenges of AP Physics

AP Physics is one of the most demanding AP courses due to its emphasis on mathematical applications, conceptual reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Some of the biggest challenges students face include:
