Introduction to Biology

Biology is the branch of natural science that deals with the study of living organisms, including plants, animals, human beings, and microorganisms. It explains how living things grow, reproduce, obtain energy, interact with their environment, and evolve over time.

The word Biology comes from two Greek words: bios, meaning life, and logos, meaning study.

7. Cell Biology

The study of cells, their structures, functions, and life processes.

3. Characteristics of Living Organisms

Living organisms share several important characteristics, often summarized by the term MRS GREN.

  • Movement: The ability to move the whole body or parts of it.

  • Respiration: The chemical processes that release usable energy from nutrients.

  • Sensitivity: The ability to detect and respond to stimuli.

  • Growth: A permanent increase in size or dry mass.

  • Reproduction: The production of new organisms.

  • Excretion: The removal of metabolic waste products.

  • Nutrition: The intake or production of materials needed for energy, growth, and repair.

4. The Cell: The Basic Unit of Life

A cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. All living organisms are made of one or more cells.

Main parts of a cell

  • Cell membrane: Controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell.

  • Cytoplasm: The material where many cellular reactions take place.

  • Nucleus: Contains most of the cell’s genetic material in eukaryotic cells.

  • Mitochondria: Carry out most cellular aerobic respiration in eukaryotes.

  • Ribosomes: Produce proteins.

  • Cell wall: Provides support and protection in plants, fungi, and many other organisms.

  • Chloroplasts: Carry out photosynthesis in plants and many algae.

  • Vacuole: Stores water and other substances; a large central vacuole helps support plant cells.

5. Important Biological Processes

Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and certain bacteria use light energy to produce energy-rich organic compounds.

A simplified equation is:

6CO2+6H2O→lightC6H12O6+6O2

Respiration

Cellular respiration releases usable energy from organic molecules, such as glucose.

A simplified aerobic respiration equation is:

C6H12O6+6O2→6CO2+6H2O+energy

Reproduction

Reproduction is the biological process through which organisms produce offspring. It can be sexual or asexual.

Digestion

Digestion breaks down food into smaller substances that can be absorbed and used by the body.

Excretion

Excretion removes waste products generated by metabolic activities, helping maintain the body’s internal balance.

6. Major Systems of the Human Body

Body system

Main function

Digestive system

Breaks down food and absorbs nutrients

Respiratory system

Exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide

Circulatory system

Transports blood, oxygen, nutrients, and wastes

Nervous system

Coordinates responses and processes information

Skeletal system

Supports the body and protects organs

Muscular system

Enables movement

Excretory system

Removes metabolic wastes and regulates water balance

Reproductive system

Produces reproductive cells and enables reproduction

Endocrine system

Regulates body functions through hormones

Immune system

Protects against pathogens and other threats

7. Genetics and Evolution

Genetics explains how characteristics pass from parents to offspring through genes. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) carries hereditary information in living organisms.

Evolution is the change in inherited characteristics of populations across generations. Natural selection is one of the major mechanisms of evolution and helps explain the diversity of life on Earth.

8. Ecology and the Environment

Ecology examines how organisms interact with one another and with their surroundings.

Important ecological concepts include:

  • Ecosystem: A community of organisms and their physical environment.

  • Habitat: The place where an organism lives.

  • Food chain: A sequence showing how energy and nutrients pass between organisms.

  • Food web: A network of interconnected food chains.

  • Biodiversity: The variety of life at genetic, species, and ecosystem levels.

  • Conservation: The protection and sustainable management of living organisms and natural resources.

9. Applications of Biology in Daily Life

Biology has many practical applications in modern society.

  • Medicine: Understanding diseases, developing vaccines, and improving treatments.

  • Agriculture: Improving crops, managing pests, and increasing food production.

  • Biotechnology: Using organisms, cells, or biological molecules to develop useful products.

  • Environmental protection: Conserving biodiversity and controlling pollution.

  • Food science: Understanding nutrition, food safety, and fermentation.

  • Forensic science: Using biological evidence such as DNA to help investigate crimes.

10. Importance of Studying Biology

Biology helps us understand living organisms, human health, inheritance, ecosystems, and the diversity of life. It encourages scientific thinking and supports advances in medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, and environmental conservation.
